The material world consists of three modes namely goodness, passion and ignorance. These three modes are the divine energy of the lord. All the material activities in the world are being conducted under these three modes of material nature. When the living entity comes in contact with nature he becomes conditioned by these modes and is difficult to overcome, but surrendering unto the lord makes the journey crossing these modes easy. The whole world is enchanted by three modes of material nature and those who are bewildered by these modes cannot understand that transcendental to this material nature is the supreme lord krsna These modes are compared to a rope, the conditioned soul is tightly tied by the rope of illusion. A man bound by the hands and feets cannot free himself, he must be helped by a person who is unbound because the bound cannot help the bound, the rescuer must be liberated therefore only lord krsna or his bona fide representatives, the spiritual master can release the conditioned soul. A person in krsna consciousness is always transcendental to the modes of nature. He has no expectation for the work entrusted to him, because he is above false ego and pride. The food and the eating habits of a living entity, influences the living entity to act in different modes of nature. Lord krsna explains in Bhagavad gita that the food each person prefers is of three kinds, according to the modes of material nature. The same matter is elaborately explained in the purport by his Divine Grace A. C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada explains that the purpose of food is to increase the duration of life, purify the mind and aid bodily strength. This is its only purpose. In the past, great authorities selected those foods that best aid health and increase life’s duration, such as milk products, sugar, rice, wheat, dal, spilt peas fruits and vegetables. These foods are very dear to those in the mode of goodness. Milk ,butter, cheese and similar products give animal fat in the form which rules out any need for the killing of innocent creatures. The food in the mode of goodness increases the duration of life, purify one’s existence and give strength, health, happiness and satisfaction. Such foods are juicy, fatty, wholesome and pleasing to the heart which is said by the lord himself Foods in the mode of passion, which are bitter, too salty, or too hot or overly mixed with red peppers are said to cause misery by reducing the mucus in the stomach, leading to disease. Foods in the mode of ignorance are essentially those that are not fresh. Any food cooked more than three hours before it is eaten(except prasadam, food offered to the lord) is considered to be in the mode of ignorance because they are decomposing , such foods give bad odour, which often attracts people in the mode of ignorance but repulse those in the mode of goodness. The best food is the remnants of what is offered to the supreme personality of godhead. Any food prepared by the injunctions of the scripture and offered to the supreme personality of godhead can be taken even if prepared long , long ago because such food is transcendental. There fore to make food antiseptic, eatable and palatable for all persons one should offer it to the supreme personality of godhead.
